Many Doctors refer to Degenerative Discs as a “part of getting older.” That does not sit well with us. As Doctors of Chiropractic, we focus on the Spine; the functional integrity of the Spine. We are focused on improving the Quality of Life for people affected by Degenerative Discs. We are constantly learning, striving to improve—seeking ways to help make a real difference in the lives of those who need us. Especially, now. It seems over the past few years, more of the Radiology reports we get are showing more and more Degenerative Discs. Perhaps this is related to the change in lifestyle many have had with working at home, or just more sedentary living. Some people have had to drive more, out of State, to find work. Seated postures, over prolonged periods, and altered posture, can affect our Spines, including our Discs. Perhaps, the degeneration is contributing to more pain—and a cycle of not being able to move as well. Discs need movement. Spinal movement is even important in how our Brain functions. Nobel Laureate, Dr Roger Sperry is attributed as recognizing that 90% of the nutrition the Brain receives is related to the movement of the Spine. If we are dealing with Degenerative Discs, we may have a hard time moving, and our posture may suffer.

Zero Gravity Spinal Disc Decompression Therapy—with lateral flexion capability. To our knowledge, no other machine has the ability for a patient to sit in a chair, and be gently reclined to allow the spine to flex side to side while being decompressed, (if that protocol is suitable for a person’s situation). 21 Different Protocols, with multiple tensile stress settings, from which Dr Darby can formulate a specific treatment plan for each person’s specific needs. The goal of Spinal Disc Decompression Therapy is to aid in rehydrating Degenerative Discs through a process of imbibition. Discs are the largest avascular structures in the body and require movement, or “pumping” to receive nutrition. The movement needs to be in specific planes of motion, and with proper tensile stress for optimal benefit. The discs, historically, have been referred to kind of like shock absorbers for the Spine, absorbing loads of compression. And this is a good analogy. But according to Dr. Paul Barlett of Cleveland University of Kansas City, musculotendinous structures absorb shock also. And perhaps, even more aptly, Discs could be compared to ball joints in a vehicle—assimilating loads, and aiding in proper movement, lending to stability of movement. In one study in the Journal, Spine, 1994 by Mimura et al, it was found that Disc Degeneration affects the multidirectional flexibility of the Spine. Under unequal loads, undue compression, or under constant compression, bulging and degeneration can occur. Spinal Decompression Therapy can help relieve compressive loads. The treatment is structural in nature, and can assist in improving posture, as back muscles will typically respond to the tension and motion. Some patients, including Dr Dave with his severely degenerative L5 disc and Spondylolisthesis, “feel taller” going through the treatment program. This may be due to rehydration of discs, or postural changes allowing for more upright posture, or both.
